Double the Armies, Double the Chaos: Allies of Inconvenience at Deeside

On Sunday 19th October, Deeside Defenders hosted their first ever Warhammer 40,000 Doubles event — Allies of Inconvenience — at the Daniel Owen Community Centre. Twelve teams (24 players in total) gathered for a day of tactical teamwork, cinematic battles, and good-natured chaos as pairs of generals joined forces to take on three rounds of matched-play missions from the latest Chapter Approved Mission Deck.
Each duo brought two 1,000-point armies to form a combined 2,000-point Strike Force, leading to some wild and wonderful army combinations on the tables. From cunning coordination to hilarious misfires, the event perfectly captured the spirit of doubles play — fun, friendly competition with just enough rivalry to keep things interesting.
After three rounds of close-fought games, here’s how the final standings shaped up:
🥇 1st Place — Take Your Kid To Work Day

Gaz and Arthur Jones stormed to victory with a formidable pairing of Chaos Knights and Space Marines, proving that family teamwork (and a few massive stompy robots) really does make the dream work.
🥈 2nd Place — Renegades

Rich Naismith and Mike Dalby battled their way to second with their brutal combo of World Eaters and Chaos Knights, leaving a trail of destruction (and skulls) in true Khornate fashion.
🥉 3rd Place — Baldy and Beardy

Martyn Bolton and Steve Bennet claimed third with their Astra Militarum and Necrons alliance — a pairing that somehow made perfect sense by the end of the day.
Special Awards
Alongside the top-three trophies, several teams earned honours in our themed category awards, celebrating excellence (and occasional madness) across the galaxy:
Scourge of the Outer Worlds (Best Xenos Team)
Kin and Chitin — Edward and James Larkin, commanding Leagues of Votann and Tyranids, proved that teamwork between bugs and dwarves can be terrifyingly effective.
Chosen of the Dark Gods (Best Chaos Team)
Renegades — Rich Naismith and Mike Dalby once again claimed glory for the forces of ruin with their World Eaters and Chaos Knights alliance.
Eternal Crusaders (Best Imperium Team)
Unclaimed this time — the Emperor’s loyal servants must have been too busy purging heresy elsewhere!
Allies of Inconvenience (Best Mixed Team)
Death and Digestion — Sam Lindsay and Adam Studdart brought Death Guard and Tyranids together in an unholy display of rot and ravenous hunger — earning the title that shares its name with the event itself.
Event Highlights and Honourable Mentions
No Deeside event would be complete without a few light-hearted accolades to round off the day:
Wooden Spoon — Bug Angels (Jordan Gillespie and Nathan Edwards)
Every great story needs underdogs — and these brave souls fought every battle with style (and occasionally, with only a few models left).
First Warlord Kill — White Men Can’t Jump (Mat Jones and Ben Lane)
Swift and decisive! The day’s first fallen commander fell to this lightning-fast duo.
The Rhino Rhys Award (First Transport Destroyed) — Good Question (Steve Whipday and Tristan Ashby)
True to the spirit of the award, they wasted no time in turning someone’s prized transport into a smoking crater.
That Guy Award (Most Disgusting 1,000-Point List) — Steve Bennet
For a list so unapologetically filthy that it’ll be remembered — and feared — for tournaments to come.
The day was a huge success, full of laughter, great sportsmanship, and some spectacularly painted armies. Deeside Defenders would like to thank everyone who came along to make the event such a brilliant celebration of the hobby.
We’re already planning to bring Allies of Inconvenience back next year — bigger, better, and just as gloriously chaotic. So keep an eye on our pages for updates, and start thinking about who you’ll be teaming up with for round two.
See you on the battlefield!
